The UNMC Department of Orthopaedic Surgery will recognize its four graduating residents with two days of events beginning Friday, including a former Olympic athlete delivering the annual Harold and Marian Andersen Lectureship for Orthopaedic Surgery.
The graduating residents and their chosen fellowships are:
- Paul Hong, M.D.: Spine Surgery Fellowship, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Pittsburgh
- Kaitlin Neary, M.D.: Foot and Ankle Fellowship, U.C. Davis/Reno Orthopaedic Clinic, Sacramento, Calif., and Reno/Tahoe, Nev.
- Paul Nielsen, M.D.: Hand Surgery Fellowship, Indiana Hand to Shoulder Center, Indianapolis
- Scott Vincent, M.D.: Spine Surgery Fellowship, University of Wisconsin School of Medicine, Madison, Wis.

This year’s graduation ceremony will include final oral presentations from the graduating residents, and will feature talks from several prominent guest speakers.
Dara Torres, a 12-time Olympic medalist and a former world record-holder in three swimming events, will present the fifth annual Harold and Marian Andersen Lectureship for Orthopaedic Surgery at 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 10, in the Sorrell Center, Room 1005.
Torres will present “Don’t Put an Age Limit on Your Dreams,” reflecting on her accomplishments as the oldest swimmer to compete in the Olympic Games. Torres swam in five different Olympics and won a 2009 ESPY award for “Best Comeback.” She also is a best-selling author, motivational speaker and news commentator/guest host.
In addition:
- Paul Duwelius, M.D., will give two guest lectures, titled “Total Hip Arthroplasty: Can We Transition to Bundled Care?” and “What’s up With Surgical Hip Approaches: Front vs. Back?” Dr. Duwelius is a 1987 graduate of the UNMC Department of Orthopaedics residency program and currently serves as chair of the Orthopedic Research Foundation and the director of the Total Joint Institute at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center in Portland, Ore.
- Tom Minas, M.D., will present on “Biological Reconstruction with Cartilage Repair.” Dr. Minas is professor of Orthopedic Surgery at Harvard Medical School, Brigham and Women’s Hospital and director of the Cartilage Repair Center.
