Department Profile – Department of Emergency Medicine

Chair – Robert Muelleman, M.D.

Beginning July 1, the Department of Emergency Medicine physician group will add the emergency department at Nebraska Medicine – Bellevue as the third practice site for emergency care.  The department also provides patient care at the emergency departments for Nebraska Medicine – Nebraska Medical Center and the Nebraska Orthopaedic Hospital.  With the addition of this site, we anticipate providing care for more than100,000 patients/year.

New faculty

New faculty recruited for FY16 and FY17 include:

Instructors:  Dr. Andrew Barnett, Dr. Sean Brozek, Dr. Erica Carlsson, Dr. Kelly Hannigan, Dr. John Hanson, Dr. Adam Krause, Dr. Scott Madden, and Dr. Cherie Welter.

Assistant Professors:  Dr. Jason Langenfeld, Dr. Elizabeth Mahal, Dr. Ross Mathiasen and Dr. Tedd Welniak.

Dr. Ross Mathiasen is practicing both emergency medicine and sports medicine.   In addition to his emergency medicine clinical practice, he sees sports medicine patients at the Durham Outpatient Center and the Oakview Medical Center Orthopaedic clinics. He has been providing medical oversight at local high school sporting events as well major events such as the Olympic Swim Trials.

We will be welcoming Dr. Elizabeth Mahal to the faculty this coming year.  Dr. Mahal will be the first faculty member practicing both emergency medicine and critical care medicine.

The Emergency Medicine residency program is preparing for the graduation of its 10th class. Originally approved for six residents/class, the complement has been increased over time, and currently class size sits at nine residents per year for the three-year program.

The Emergency Department continues to set itself apart through two annual programs – the Vietnam Collaboration and the Rural Emergency Medicine Course.

To honor the late Paul Tran, M.D., physicians travel to Vietnam to teach the U.S. approach to graduate medical education. A contingent of emergency faculty has traveled each year since 2013 to teach at the medical schools in Thai Binh and Hanoi.

The Rural Emergency Medicine Course provides a variety of lectures, simulation, and a rare cadaver lab not featured at the majority of similar courses around the country. This year, the department enjoyed record attendance.
