Name: Galen Kathol

Title: Director, Dean’s Business Office

Hometown: Hartington, Neb.

Talk about your job and what you like best about it:

Every day is something new and challenging.  Some days you come to work and only get to spend about 10 minutes on what you intended to do that day.

Your favorite memories of working at UNMC:

  • Going to the Peony Park picnics.
  • The reception I received when I left my positon at Business and Finance and College of Dentistry.
  • The Gold and Silver U awards.

Hobbies:

  • Just started to home brew beer, and it’s not going well.  It’s probably going to be a short-lived hobby.
  • Tinkering around the house.

List three things people may not know about you:

  • When I took my first job at UNMC, I commuted to Omaha from Lincoln for the first year (and really didn’t like it much).  After I moved to Omaha for several years, I took an administrator job in Lincoln and commuted to Lincoln from Omaha for the next seven years. (It didn’t get much better.)
  • My first association with UNMC was 50 years ago. When I was 10, an illness brought me to University Hospital, and I spent a day watching them build Wittson Hall. When I was well enough to leave, I told the doctors I wasn’t coming back. I never thought I would spend 30 years of my working career there.
  • My dream job would be a farmer.
