Agreement Enables Omaha-Beijing Clinical Student Exchange

Chancellor Gold and CMU's President Zhaofeng LU after signing the agreement between UNMC and CMU in March.

Three medical students from Beijing’s Capital Medical University (CMU) are currently doing clinical rotations in a number of departments on UNMC’s campus. They will stay for two months.

These three students are excited to be here and to learn. One of them, Chuxuan Bin, says, "because of the differences between the American and Chinese medical systems, the most important thing I want to learn is the advantages of the medical system and education here. UNMC is a window for us to learn sophisticated medical skills." Shuoqi Chen, another exchange student, added that "UNMC has made a deep impression on me because of its working process, which is efficient, advanced, humanized, and convenient. The medical workers have feelings of patience, compassion, and a strong sense of responsibility. It is a great pleasure to be here!"

Only these three CMU MD students will participate in the exchange program this year. However, an agreement signed by Chancellor Gold in March 2016 opens the door for greater student exchange possibilities between UNMC and China. Next year, students from UNMC’s College of Medicine will be able to do rotations at CMU in Beijing, and in future years, students from the Colleges of Nursing and Allied Health may join them.

Chuxuan says that UNMC students should come to CMU because "it is one of the most famous medical universities in China and the hospitals which are affiliated to it have many of the highest ranked specialties in China."

CMU is one of the top academic medical institutions in China. It has 10 schools, 14 affiliated hospitals, and one teaching institution. The University and affiliated hospitals have a staff of approximately 20,000. There are more than 9,000 students enrolled in its bachelors, masters, and doctoral programs.
