Twenty-seven students from five undergraduate institutions from across the state gathered at the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Public Health for a week-long public health workshop, May 9-13, learning about career opportunities in public health.

“The workshop represents a great opportunity for undergraduate students enrolled in institutions across Nebraska to become introduced to the multidisciplinary world of public health,” said Patrik Johansson, M.D., director of the Rural Health Education Network in the College of Public Health.

This is the fourth year for the workshop. While on campu,s participants engaged in a series of academic presentations from public health practitioners that gave insight into epidemiology and how it relates to public health and learned about the social determinants of health and health disparities.

The students also made a site visit to the Northeast Nebraska Public Health Department in Wayne, Neb., which allowed the students to gain a glimpse of the wide range of duties and responsibilities of rural public health practitioners.

The students also were introduced to all nine recommended critical components of an undergraduate major in public health and participated in team research projects led by six UNMC College of Public Health graduate students.
