Sixty members of the UNMC High School Alliance are among the students taking classes at UNMC this academic year.
The students come from high schools around Omaha and take college-level classes to prepare for health careers.
Today we meet:
- Name: Autumn Breazile
- High school: Bennington High School
- Year: Senior
How did you learn about the UNMC High School Alliance?
I learned about the High School Alliance through my friend, Tyler Housch. Tyler was in the program last year. He thought I should apply to the program because he really enjoyed it. I took his advice and here I am.
What sparked your interest in science?
I really got into science once I moved to Bennington my sophomore year of high school. I took chemistry and biology that year. Then in my junior year, I took AP chemistry and anatomy. Those classes were the most interesting to me compared to reading and social studies.
What are your career aspirations?
I want to be a physician assistant in trauma or neurosurgery. While going to college (at Wayne State College in the RHOP program), I hope to get a job as an EMT on a volunteer department in a nearby town to my college.
What has been the best part of your UNMC High School Alliance experience so far?
The best part has definitely been the shadowing experience. The classes are great, but there are things that you learn in shadowing professionals that can’t be explained in the classroom. My first shadowing experience actually made me switch which profession I wanted to do and I changed my RHOP application.
