Tony Hollingsworth, M.D., will run 13.1 miles this weekend and then head for the summit.
Dr. Hollingsworth, along with UNMC student Jamie Abrego, will be running the Lincoln Marathon again this year to raise money for Project Purple. (Dr. Hollingsworth will run the half-marathon, while Abrego will run the full 26.2 miles).
“Virtually all of this money goes to pancreatic cancer research projects at UNMC,” Dr. Hollingsworth said.
On Monday after the marathon, Dr. Hollingsworth will host UNMC’s Summit on Collaborative Studies of Pancreatic Research, which will take place in the Eppley Science Hall Amphitheater from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Project Purple, founded by Dino Verelli to raise awareness and funds toward a cure for pancreatic cancer, is co-sponsoring the event.
The event will feature 17 speakers discussing collaborative projects in pancreatic cancer, including UNMC’s Surinder Batra, Ph.D., professor and chair of the UNMC Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. For a complete list of speakers, click here.
“The symposium is intended to both highlight awareness for the research effort in pancreatic cancer and to present a platform for discussing collaborative research projects,” Dr. Hollingsworth said.
Registration is required. The symposium is free and open to anyone. A box lunch will be provided to those who register for the event — registration has been extended until noon Friday.
