Editor’s Note: Each month, InterCOM will highlight a "Student of the Month" from the College of Medicine. Students will be featured for their participation in activities outside of medical school and for making a difference in the community. The goal is to recognize students for what they are doing and to encourage other students to get involved in the community. After all, medical school should be much more than studying.

Activities:
Not many people know this about me, but I was involved in one activity of consequence during my four years at UNMC, and that activity was intramural broomball. Broomball glory was a demanding, yet rewarding, pursuit. I was fortunate enough to be a member of the Dali Lamneths, a broomball team named in honor of our beloved anatomy professor, Dr. Carol Lomneth. We were a ragtag group of med students who came together via a Facebook post during our M1 year to form a dynasty. We won three consecutive broomball championships and lost only one game throughout four, dominating seasons. This accomplishment played prominently on my residency application and is the primary reason I successfully matched.
Staying Balanced:
I’ve been lucky to be a part of a very cohesive and fun class. One of our favorite activities is karaoke. Most Thursday nights we go to Omaha’s classiest karaoke venue, the Marylebone Tavern, to blow off some steam. Each week there’s a mix of UNMC and UNO students, regulars, and this grandfather named Karl, that come together along Leavenworth Street to belt out everything from Sinatra to Mumford and Sons. This weekly activity has kept me balanced and improved my grades significantly, as has running a few miles each day.
Three things people don't know about me:
- I’m a news junkie.
- I matched into the same residency program as my brother, which could be interesting.
- I’m an Eagle Scout.
I am sure it was your fantastic handshake that for you the residency!
I love this guy.
I am sure it was your fantastic handshake that landed you the residency.
