Name: Rita Smith

Title: Residency coordinator, Department of Family Medicine

Hometown: Utica, Neb., home of the Centennial Broncos

Talk about your job and what you like best about it:

I have been working at UNMC and with residents for 15 years. As the family medicine residency coordinator, I help oversee the resident’s education during their residency training. I am one of the first people the residents meet when they start their first day of residency. My phone number is quickly memorized and will be called many times over the next three years and for many years to come. I like that there is a lot of variety to my days and that I get to interact with all of the residents, faculty and support staff in the department of family medicine. I feel lucky to work for one of the best departments at UNMC.

Your favorite memory of working at UNMC:

There are really too many to name since I have been here so long. One that I enjoy each year is planning and attending the graduation ceremony. It is great being able to celebrate with the residents and their families and have them be recognized for their accomplishments.

Hobbies:

Reading, traveling, spending time with family and friends, collecting dust bunnies.

List three things people may not know about you:

  • My goal is to get in better shape this year. I am going to attempt to run my first 5k this summer.
  • I met my husband at my first job right out of college (State Farm) and have been married to him for 12 years.
  • I am a co-leader for my daughter’s Daisy Girl Scout troop. Having been a girl scout myself, I enjoy being a part of an organization that teaches girls to be confident and courageous and at the same time encourages them to do what they can to help make the world a better place.
