The Nebraska Science Festival invites the UNMC community to attend a free panel discussion featuring women successful in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) careers.
“Women in Science” will be April 21 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Barbara Weitz Community Engagement Center at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. Panelists will share their life experiences, as well as lessons learned, as they inspire others to consider STEM careers.
Panelists are:
- Shilpa Buch, Ph.D., professor of pharmacology and experimental neuroscience in the College of Medicine and director of The Nebraska Center for Substance Abuse Research at UNMC
- Shonna Dorsey, co-founder and the managing director for Interface: The Web School
- Kristi Nohavec, structural engineer at Leo A. Daly
The policy of the White House Office of Science and Technology says supporting women STEM students and researchers is not only an essential part of America’s strategy to out-innovate, out-educate, and out-build the rest of the world; it also is important to women themselves.
Women in STEM jobs earn 33 percent more than those in non-STEM occupations and experience a smaller wage gap relative to men. STEM careers also offer women the opportunity to engage in some of the most exciting realms of discovery and technological innovation.
To attend, simply RSVP to nescifest@gmail.com as space is limited.
The Science Festival is designed to make science accessible, interactive, relevant and fun for kids and adults alike. In addition to UNMC, other sponsors include the Nebraska Coalition for Lifesaving Cures, Nebraska Medicine, Metro Credit Union, West Corporation and media sponsors KETV and the Omaha World-Herald.
