April is National Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month, and UNMC is holding “It’s on US” activities on April 19 and 21 to raise awareness and prevention throughout the university’s campuses.
In a presidential proclamation, President Barack Obama said:
“Too many women and men of all ages suffer the outrage that is sexual assault, and too often, this crime is not condemned as loudly as it should be. Together, we must stand up and speak out to change the culture that questions the actions of victims, rather than those of their attackers.
“As their relatives, friends, neighbors, and fellow Americans, it’s on us to support victims and survivors by providing them with the care they need, bringing perpetrators to justice, and ensuring our institutions are held responsible and do not look the other way.
“This month, we reaffirm our commitment to shift the attitudes that allow sexual assault to go unanswered and unpunished, and we redouble our efforts to prevent this human rights violation from happening in the first place.”
The activities held on the UNMC Omaha campus include:
Let’s Talk About Consent (because we need to and we want to)
Noon-12:50 p.m., April 19, Sorrell Center, Room 2014
The discussion will focus on issues of consent, as well as recognizing when consent has been withdrawn or cannot legally be given. Free UNMC “It’s on US” T-shirts and personal pizzas will be provided for the first 50 students and staff in attendance.
It’s on Us — All of Us – to Stop Sexual Assault
Spring Fair & Picnic
3-5 p.m., April 21, Ruth and Bill Scott Student Plaza (Rain location, Sorrell Center commons)
Join us for an afternoon picnic filled with activities, information and surprises. The fair provides an opportunity for students and employees to meet with an array of campus and community resources, such as Omaha agencies that provide support for sexual and domestic violence victims, UNMC Counseling & Student Development Center, UNMC Wellness Activities and Stress Management, and much more. Free UNMC “It’s on US” T-shirts will be provided to the first 50 UNMC students and employees in attendance. Free sandwiches, chips, fruit and cookies will be provided.
