Public invited to learn about allied health careers at UNMC event on April 2

The University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Allied Health Professions will hold a free Backstage Pass event on Saturday, April 2, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., for people interested in learning about careers in the allied health professions.

The demand for allied health professionals is high as virtually all fields face a staffing shortage. The event will enable prospective students to talk with current students, as well as faculty, and learn first-hand about allied health careers. Students will get to experience some of the new technology used in the classroom.

Allied health professionals — which include radiographers, medical laboratory scientists, physician assistants and sonographers — make up approximately 60 percent of the health care workforce.

Pre-registration is required for the free Backstage Pass event, which will be held in the Michael F. Sorrell Center for Health Science Education, northeast corner of 42nd and Emile streets. Free parking is available in Lot 4 directly south of the Sorrell Center.

Students will have the opportunity to hear about the college’s 11 professions and engage in interactive booths with activities that demonstrate what each profession is like. In addition, admissions staff will be on hand to answer questions about applying to one of the college’s academic programs.

The 11 professions represented are:
•Cardiovascular interventional technology;
•Clinical perfusion education;
•Cytotechnology;
•Diagnostic medical sonography;
•Magnetic resonance imaging;
•Medical laboratory science (formerly known as clinical laboratory science);
•Medical nutrition education;
•Physical therapy;
•Physician assistant;
•Radiation therapy; and
•Radiography.
