Ali S. Khan, M.D., M.P.H., dean of the UNMC College of Public Health, has been tapped by the federal government to serve on two panels regarding public health.
In February, he was invited by the White House to participate in a panel on his proposal to revise the Select Agent Regulations (SAR).
The SAR is a set of guidelines for the safety and security oversight of biological agents and toxins in the U.S. Following several biosafety incidents at U.S. government laboratories in 2014, the White House issued a memorandum outlining a series of short- and long-term actions to enhance laboratory biosafety and biosecurity practices.
Long-term actions included engaging broader stakeholders’ input into how the SAR has impacted science, technology, and national security in the United States.
In May, Dr. Khan will serve as a member of the Transportation Research Board panel in Washington, D.C. The panel will explore arriving flights and passenger quarantine planning at airports. He was invited to serve by the National Academies of Sciences.
Dr. Khan is a wonderful mentor, knowledgeable, and genuinely cares about sharing information with his students. Since I sat in one of his classes, I have read every article I could and avidly followed his career. If ever given the chance I would choose him for a mentor. – A. Dye
