The med center campus welcomed a brand-new United States citizen last month.
Sang Han, a Sodexo worker in environmental services, who has been at the med center for seven years this month, came to the United States from South Korea in March of 1987, after marrying a service member who she’s since divorced.
It was after the divorce that she decided to apply for citizenship, especially after the birth of her first grandchild, who is now three years old. She also has three sons, and she felt it was time to officially become an American.
She took classes at a local church while preparing for the citizenship test, and her friends at the UNMC administration building, where she works, were supportive of her efforts, she said.
Aileen Warren, assistant vice chancellor for human resources, said Han’s UNMC friends were pleased for Han and impressed by her achievement.
“Sang is a hard worker and extremely pleasant individual who always has a smile on her face,” Warren said. “Everyone in our building is so proud of her and what she has accomplished!”
Han says she likes cleaning; in fact, she had her own business before joining Sodexo at the med center. But seven years ago, people were cutting back on household expenses, and she lost a lot of clients. So she decided to come to UNMC, and she hasn’t regretted it.
“I love it here,” she said.
Her next goal: She is taking an English as a Second Language class in Benson to improve her conversational English.
Sang is a very friendly, positive, motivated and dedicated individual. She always greets me as I walk in the door each morning with a smile and "how are you doing today?" What an accomplishment and congratulations on your achieving American Citizenship.
