Nebraska State Student Nurses Association holds board elections

Last Saturday, on a day that Gov. Pete Ricketts proclaimed as Nebraska State Student Nurses Day, UNMC nursing students, faculty advisors and UNMC College of Nursing Dean Juliann Sebastian, Ph.D., were among 200 attendees of the annual convention of the Nebraska State Student Nurses Association held in Lincoln. NSSNA board elections included five members from the UNMC College of Nursing West Nebraska Division in Scottsbluff. The most Outstanding Community Health Award went to the UNMC Student Nurses Association Lincoln Campus and the most Unique Community Health Award went to the UNMC Scottsbluff Student Nurses Association. The Nebraska State Student Nurse of the Year 2015-2016 Award went to Eli Rodriguez of the UNMC College of Nursing West Nebraska Division, along with a $500 scholarship. Rodriguez also is a new board member and is past president of the association.

Retirements announced

The UNMC Department of Human Resources has released a list of retirements for January, February and March. Lillian Richards, internal medicine-pulmonary, led the way with 28 years of service followed by Michael Zimmer, an electrician in facilities management and planning, with 26 years of service. Here’s the complete list of retirees:

  • Anne Hubbard, M.D., radiology, retired Jan. 1 (start date July 1, 2005)
  • Ben Boedeker, M.D., anesthesiology, retired Jan. 9 (start date April 16, 2003)
  • Cynthia Beaumont, internal medicine-pulmonary, retired Jan. 20 (start date Nov. 23, 2004)
  • Lillian Richards, internal medicine-pulmonary, retired Jan. 29 (start date April 20, 1987)
  • Randal Haack, College of Dentistry-dental administration, retired Feb. 1 (start date June 14, 2010)
  • Michael Zimmerman, facilities, management and planning-electricians, retired Feb. 5 (start date March 6, 1989)
  • Judith Schlife, College of Nursing-Lincoln Division, will retire March 1 (start date July 13, 2005)

Department of Developmental Neuroscience expands
The MMI Department of Developmental Neuroscience has recently added three new faculty members. Sung-Ho Huh, Ph.D., assistant professor, was hired in conjunction with the Center for Regenerative Medicine, and Peng Jiang, Ph.D., assistant professor, also has a joint appointment with the center. Dr. C.B. Gurumurthy, assistant professor and director of the Mouse Genome Engineering Core, also has joined the department since the faculty members all interact with the core. Director Shelley Smith, Ph.D., said the new faculty members will significantly increase the departmental research capability in the study of developmental disabilities.

Zoo membership drive will be Feb. 23 to March 27
UNMC’s annual membership drive for the Henry Doorly Zoo will run from Feb. 23 to March 27. UNMC employees and students are eligible to receive a $10 discount during the membership drive, in addition to the already reduced membership drive price offered by the zoo. The discounted pricing is only offered during the membership drive, Feb. 23 to March 27. More information will be provided as we get closer to Feb. 23.
