James Armitage, M.D., named deputy editor of the Journal of Oncology Practice
NU leaders visit STRATCOMM
U.S. Navy Adm. Cecil D. Haney, U.S. Strategic Command (USSTRATCOM) commander, and representatives from the command last week hosted Hank Bounds, Ph.D., University of Nebraska president, and more than 20 senior leaders from the university — including UNMC Chancellor Jeffrey P. Gold, M.D., and other UNMC leaders — to discuss USSTRATCOM’s global missions and promote military-to-university cooperation and innovation.
The American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) announced this month that the Journal of Oncology Practice (JOP) will be printed on a monthly basis and offer new resources to supply oncology professionals with cutting-edge information on cancer care delivery. Doubling its content, the expanded journal also features clinical information from a multidisciplinary care team perspective led by UNMC’s James Armitage, M.D., Joe Shapiro Professor of Medicine, as new deputy editor.
Each issue of JOP will now expand to include three clinical reviews that will focus on pertinent problems in delivering care. Dr. Armitage has been selected as the deputy editor of the new clinical review section, which provides highly practical, clinical reviews authored by thought leaders in oncology and relevant subspecialties. Additional experts will provide commentaries to accompany each review.
“Our goal is to expand on the journal to provide more insight into how we can deliver care efficiently and effectively,” Dr. Armitage said. “These changes will make JOP a go-to resource for practicing oncologists, with information that can help them improve the quality of care they provide.”

New Buffett Institute program supports doctoral students’ early childhood research
A new fellowship program announced this week by the Buffett Early Childhood Institute at the University of Nebraska will provide financial support and mentoring for advanced doctoral students within the university system. The Buffett Early Childhood Institute Graduate Scholars program will award one- and two-year grants, each worth up to $25,000 annually, to a maximum of four doctoral students every year.
The program is designed to foster the growth of diverse, exceptional graduate students conducting research about young children and their families, with particular attention to children placed at risk as a consequence of poverty and social and environmental circumstances. The Buffett Graduate Scholars will work with their faculty mentors on a dissertation that represents an in-depth exploration of early childhood issues. The Institute will create opportunities for graduate students and mentors to communicate, network, and collaborate with one another.
Letters of intent from applicants are due March 15, and full applications must be submitted by April 15. Announcement of the inaugural award winners will be made by the end of June 2016. View the Buffett Institute Graduate Scholars Request for Proposal.
