What are you doing for others?

The Rev. Portia Cavitt delivered a lively and well received keynote address during Monday’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day program. Rev. Cavitt, pastor of Clair Memorial United Methodist Church in North Omaha, asked those in attendance, “What are you doing for others?”

“We all have to look deep within ourselves to get the answer to that question,” she advised. “It’s not for your gain, but it’s giving of yourself so others may benefit.”

Rev. Cavitt says the struggle continues in North Omaha to gain economic equality. And she once again asked the audience, “What are you going to do about it?

“How many of us are willing to put out and not expect anything in return? That’s what Martin Luther King’s life was about.”

Prior to Rev. Cavitt’s presentation, the Clair Children’s Angel Choir performed two musical selections. The group consists of youth from the Clair Memorial United Methodist Church.

Rev. Cavitt is a strong advocate for children, education, justice and community involvement, working with various other committees and community organizations within the city. She is a board member for Project Extra Mile and the vice president of the North Omaha Community Care Council.

Rev. Cavitt also is a youth mentor, supervises juveniles for community service, is a member of United Way of the Midlands Community Investment Review Team and volunteers at Wakonda Elementary School.
