Sixty members of the UNMC High School Alliance are among the students taking classes at UNMC this academic year.
The students come from high schools around Omaha and take college-level classes to prepare for health careers.
Today we meet:
- Name: Brandon Keffer
- High school: Arlington High School
- Year: Senior
How did you learn about the UNMC High School Alliance?
I was sitting in my psychology class, and my guidance counselor approached me about the UNMC High School Alliance. He said I would be good for the program, but I was reluctant to apply because I did not think that I would get in. I eventually completed the application and was accepted into the program, and I have been happy ever since.
What sparked your interest in science?
I grew up around the health care culture, and I have always loved science, particularly medicine, because it is so fascinating.
What are your career aspirations?
I want to come to UNMC after my undergraduate degree is completed, and I want to become a urologist. I plan on working in the Omaha area afterwards.
What has been the best part of your UNMC High School Alliance experience so far?
I have enjoyed interacting with all of the people in the program. I live in a rural area where people are scarce, so it is cool meeting and getting to know all of the “city kids” and learning how they live.
