Bridge to Care, a student-led interprofessional organization focused on refugee health at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, will host its biannual refugee health fair on Nov. 14, from 11a.m. to 3 p.m. at Monroe Middle School, 5105 Bedford Ave., in Benson.
More than 140 UNMC students representing all colleges and 22 community vendors will volunteer at the health fair providing health education, screenings, and services for 400 to 500 refugees from Sudan, Somali, Karen and Bhutan.
Free services will include flu immunizations as well as vision, dental, body mass index, blood pressure and glucose level screenings. Services will be provided by:
- UNMC – ophthalmology, the Optical Shop, Operation Diabetes and Empower;
- Creighton University – Family Medicine Residency Clinic and Creighton University Dental;
- One World;
- Charles Drew;
- North Omaha Area Health Clinic;
- United Health Care;
- Douglas County Health Department; and
- Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services.
Volunteers and anyone interested in working with refugees in the health care setting can take advantage of a one-hour refugee cultural orientation, presented by Omaha Public Schools Refugee Specialist Alana Schriver, at noon on Friday, Nov. 6. The presentation is sponsored by Bridge to Care, and will be held in the Sorrell Center, Room 2010.
