College of Medicine student elected to serve on AMA national advisory panel
R. Logan Jones, a third-year College of Medicine student, has been elected to serve on the Accelerating Change in Medical Education National Advisory Panel for the American Medical Association. Jones, who is curriculum chair for his medical school class, also serves as chair of the AMA-Medical Student Section Standing Committee on Medical Education. He also is a medical student board member for the Nebraska Medical Association.
UNMC nursing students in Norfolk receive workforce diversity grant scholarships
Seven students at the UNMC College of Nursing Northern Division in Norfolk have received scholarships funded by a $665,266 Nursing Workforce Diversity grant through the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration. The grant focuses on implementing a variety of methods to support students from diverse backgrounds to achieve academic success. In addition to the $2,500 scholarship and stipend, the grant will pay tuition for a six-week course between the first and second year of the nursing program. It allows students to work alongside registered nurses in the Northern Division service area in their chosen field of study to prepare them for success in the second year of the nursing program.
Students are expected to “pay it forward” by mentoring high school students interested in nursing careers. Plans are in place for a variety of activities that allow interactions in a simulated health care environment as well as activities that will facilitate a relationship between interested high school youth and nursing students.

International photography contest deadline is Oct. 26
The international photography contest will be held in conjunction with International Week, which will run from Nov. 9-13. To enter, complete the online submission form here. The deadline to submit photos is Oct. 26.
Rules for the photo contest are as follows:
- Photographs must have been shot by the entrant since Oct. 1, 2014.
- Limit one entry per person.
- No entry fee.
- Digital photographs should be taken at the highest resolution possible and must be submitted in a .jpeg format.
- Files submitted may not be larger than 5 mb.
- Submit a brief description (50 words or less) of the photo.
- Digitally or otherwise enhanced or altered photos will not be accepted.
- By entering the contest, entrants grant UNMC a royalty-free, worldwide, perpetual, non-exclusive license to display, distribute and reproduce, in whole or in part, in any media now existing or subsequently developed, for any educational, promotional and publicity purposes.
Med center teams support breast cancer patients, survivors and their families

More than 30 people joined the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center team in support of this year’s Komen Nebraska Race for the Cure held at Baxter Arena. The event had more than 9,000 registered walkers/runners. The team’s strong show of support and interactive pink fingerprint activity were well-received by the community and, most importantly, our patients.
“It’s an amazing day filled with lots of interaction with the community and survivors. We had a wonderful group of volunteers from the Nebraska Medicine and UNMC teams, and I’m proud of our show of support for breast cancer survivors,” said Michelle Grady, physician outreach liaison for oncology and a volunteer at the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center booth.

Dr. Vose to deliver keynote address at Patient-Centered Oncology Care Conference
Julie Vose, M.D., professor and chief of UNMC’s hematology/oncology division in the department of internal medicine, will deliver the keynote address on Nov. 19 at the Patient-Centered Oncology Care Conference in Baltimore for the American Journal of Managed Care (AJMC). Patient-Centered Oncology Care, now in its fourth year, highlights current issues that cut across the research, insurance, regulatory, policy, pharmacy, and technology realms. The event aims to bring together stakeholders from across the health care spectrum — who might otherwise not gather in one place — to find solutions for some of the biggest challenges facing cancer care delivery.
Earlier this year, Dr. Vose, who is the current president of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), joined more than 100 oncologists to sign a commentary in the Mayo Clinic Proceedings that supported a patient-driven initiative to lower the cost of cancer drugs.
