Seven students at the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Nursing Northern Division in Norfolk have received scholarships funded by a $665,266 Nursing Workforce Diversity grant through the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration.
The grant focuses on implementing a variety of methods to support students from diverse backgrounds to achieve academic success. Faculty and peer academic coaching, scholarships, and leadership opportunities are in place to support students from their first day of nursing school.
In addition to the $2,500 scholarship and stipend, the grant will pay tuition for a six-week course between the first and second year of the nursing program. It allows students to work alongside registered nurses in the Northern Division service area in their chosen field of study to prepare them for success in the second year of the nursing program.
Students are expected to “pay it forward” by mentoring high school students interested in nursing careers. Plans are in place for a variety of activities that allow interactions in a simulated health care environment as well as activities that will facilitate a relationship between interested high school youth and nursing students.
