EMPOWER, a partnership between UNMC’s Service Learning Academy and the Women’s Center for Advancement (WCA), will be holding a fall fundraiser at the Bellevue Berry Farms from 7:30 to 11:30 p.m. Oct. 23 as part of a series of events marking Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
Tickets for the fundraiser will be on sale Tuesday and Thursday, as well as Oct. 20 and 23, from noon to 1 p.m. in the Sorrell Center.
This week, the group also will sponsor a “Breaking the Silence” post-secret art creation. EMPOWER invites participants to “break the silence” by anonymously sharing their story of domestic violence or sexual assault on a postcard.
Postcards sharing stories can be left in a box on the second floor of the Sorrell Center (by microwaves). A “Breaking the Silence” post-secret art display will be displayed on campus from Oct. 21 to Nov. 1.
On Oct. 22, members of the UNMC community are encouraged to wear purple and tweet a selfie @UNMCEMPOWER to encourage domestic violence awareness on campus (and for a chance to win a prize.) Use hashtags #PurpleThursday and #IAmUNMC.
Other events include a WCA health fair from 3 to 5 p.m. on Oct. 27 at the WCA offices at 222 S. 29th St., and an EMPOWER discussion group on from noon to 12:50 p.m. on Oct. 28 in the Sorrell Center, Room 2014, on how domestic violence affects children.
