Each Thursday, we feature a medical center employee. This week, we learn about:
- Name: Jack Swanson
- Hometown: Omaha
- No. of years at UNMC: 34 years
Tell us a bit about what you do here at UNMC.
I run the Furniture Stores warehouse on 38th Avenue and Leavenworth Street. From there, I take care of storage, UNMC surplus and do small moves all across campus. I also sell furniture back on campus at a very good price.
Commitment to excellence is one of UNMC’s brand values. Tell us of a time you witnessed a person or group demonstrate commitment to excellence at UNMC.
I thought about this for a long time, because I have so many great stories. The one I chose is one I see every day in my travels around our hospital and campus, and that is seeing front-line employees such as environmental services, mailroom, general supply and office employees helping patients, their families and visitors to navigate our hospital and campus, which can be very intimidating. It takes special people in this day and age — where so many just walk on by with indifference, our UNMC people step up and make a difference. It feels good to help too!
What is your favorite fall activity?
Grandchildren anything, golf, bass fishing, Husker football parties.
List three things people may not know about you.
- My mother, Janice, retired from the College of Nursing after 21 years, my sister, Lynne, works in gastroenterology, and my brother, Joe, works in the pharmacy. My wife, Paula (definitely my better half), has been at UNMC for 30 years and currently works for the Munroe-Meyer Institute.
- Paula and I have been married for 31 years and have three beautiful girls and one handsome boy. We also have four grandchildren — three boys (one named for me) and one girl (owns me) — and I’m sure more are on the way. Can’t wait!
- Love going to any movie my wife picks out and eating as much popcorn as I possibly can.
Great story! Jack is one of the "good ones" at UNMC for sure!!
Go Jack Go!!!
Nice feature on a great employee! Jack Swanson always goes the extra mile!
Some of my most fun memories of working at UNMC involve Jack and Randy. Congratulations Jack on all you do and keep up that great sense of humor!
UNMC picked a winner when they hired Jack. Always friendly and helpful.
Great story. Jack is a very good golfer, although i beat him once. Ok, it was only one hole, but still. All who know Jack love his smile and his demeanor. He is one of UNMC's long-timers, from the days of Ernie Rockenbach and Delmer Lee.
JACK! What a bright light he is on campus!
You are awesome at your Job Jack, kuddo's to you and the best to you and the family!!
Hey Jack,
Congratulations. Jack and I have known each other for a very long time here on campus. He is such a joy to work with!
As you can tell from this article, Jack is a fun guy. He's known all over campus and you can't be talking to him anywhere on site without numerous folks passing and greeting him. We are lucky to have Jack (and Paula). The work he does single-handedly is a tremendous asset to UNMC. Jack always has a smile on his face. I worked with him for 7 years and I miss his daily BLAST of energy and sunshine.
Awesome couple!
Jack – you are just the greatest. Always there when we need you! I am really going to see you…too bad Paula's getting so good at golf – you might have to step aside for her. Maybe I will see you on the golf course! Go Huskers!
Everyone is thrilled that both you and Paula work at UNMC
Jack lights up an entire office area! His visits can be the highlight of the day.
We love it when Jack comes to our floor! Thanks for all that you do!
If Jack ever had a bad day, you would never know it. Whenever I have needed his help or have seen him around campus, he always has a smile and greeting for all. He definitely brightens our day !
Jack brings so much to the University. He is such a genuine and sincere person; he is such a joy to work with.
Jack is a gem. UNMC should be very proud of him.
Great story Jack. Thanks for your help over the years!!
Love the picture of Jack — always busy, always talking, always a smile. Agree with Charlie Murrin — Jack is a gem for UNMC!
Hi Jack, congrats on being a star of the day! I golf with Paula, (and Becky and Ann on Wed nites) in fact you were suppose to come and help us with our clubs) 🙂 Say Hi to Paula. Congrats again
There is probably nothing I can say that hasn't already been posted, but Jack is an all around Great Guy and a very hard worker. He gets things done quickly and without complaints and everyone has fun while he is doing it. I only believe half of his stories though…..
The world is a better place with Jack Swanson. I love to play Jack in the UNMC golf league. He always makes me laugh while he destroys me.
A well deserved recognition to a hard working employee.
Yep, we all know and love Jack – he IS a bright spot on campus and I too appreciate his quick work & humor when he comes to the dept. But I can honestly say he's never beaten me at golf. : )
One of the MOST humble people I have ever met at UNMC! He is always smiling, and wearing shorts 🙂 Even in the winter months! Great job, Jack — you work hard and deserve to be the star! Congrats.
