September is Campus Safety Awareness Month.
UNMC is holding several events to mark the month and highlight various aspects of safety awareness.
Events include:
- Sept. 1 and 2: Alcohol Awareness events. The presentations, held from noon to 1:30 p.m. at the Ruth & Bill Scott Student Plaza at the Sorrell Center, will include “drunkbuster goggle” activities. The goggles simulate drunkenness when worn. In addition, there will be information on the Safe Ride Home program and “mocktail” recipe handouts. Participants in the “drunkbuster” goggle challenge will be entered into a drawing to win a prize.
- Sept. 9 and 10: Video presentation. The film “Run, Hide, Fight,” which demonstrates options during an armed intruder situation, will be shown at 12:10 and 12:30 p.m. in the Sorrell Center, Room 3029. There also will be safety handouts available, and audience members for the film will be entered into a drawing to win a prize.
- Sept. 14: The “It’s on US” campaign against sexual violence and harassment launches. From noon to 1 p.m. at the Durham Research Center and the Sorrell Center, safety committee volunteers will hand out information on the “It’s on US” campaign, run by the UNMC Department of Human Resources and EMPOWER. A video will be shown at each location.
- Sept. 16: The documentary “The Hunting Ground,” an expose of sexual assault on U.S. campuses, will be shown at 5 p.m. at the DRC auditorium. Counselors from the WCA will be on-site if needed. There will be free popcorn during the screening.
- Sept. 23 and 24: Fire extinguisher training. Try to put out a fire with our electronic fire extinguisher! The event will be held from 11:20 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Sorrell Center. Participants in the event will be entered into a drawing to win a prize.
