COM Student of the Month – Derek Shafer, a fourth-year medical student

College of Medicine Student of the Month – Derek Shafer, a fourth-year medical student.

Editor’s Note: Each month, InterCOM will highlight a "Student of the Month" from the College of Medicine. Students will be featured for their participation in activities outside of medical school and for making a difference in the community. The goal is to recognize students for what they are doing and to encourage other students to get involved in the community. After all, medical school should be much more than studying.

Staying Balanced:

My wife is a daily reminder that there are more important things than medical school. We have been married for quite some time now (two whole years!), and it’s a blast. She helps bring me back to earth occasionally.

List three things people may not know about you:

1. I have four younger brothers and one adorable two-year-old sister.
2. I am going into family medicine.
3. I like to country swing dance.
