Twenty-four undergraduate students are spending the summer conducting research.
They are called INBRE scholars and are part of the largest grant in UNMC history.
Today we meet Emily Maguire of La Vista, who is studying human biology at the College of Saint Mary.
What should we know about you?
I play softball at the collegiate level, and I believe doing so has pushed me to learn how to balance my athletics, academics, family and social life. I am a much more hardworking and driven individual because of that.
What or who influenced your interest in science?
I have mostly been influenced by my teachers to pursue a career in science.
What is it about science that excites you?
You are constantly learning something new every day, taking old concepts and discovering new ways to apply them to whatever you are working on.
Will you pursue a career in science? If so, what do you hope to accomplish?
I do hope to pursue some sort of career in science, whether it is medical school or sports medicine.
Why is it important to have programs like INBRE?
Programs like INBRE allow students to step out of their boundaries and into the real world of science and experience it firsthand. I am doing experiments and using equipment that I have studied but never imagined I would actually be able to use. I think INBRE has allowed me to become much more confident in my abilities and has opened up a new insight to the possibilities when it comes to research.
