Harris Frankel, M.D., associate professor of neurological sciences

Dr. Frankel named president of the Nebraska Medical Association
Harris Frankel, M.D., associate professor of neurological sciences at UNMC and chief medical director and senior vice president of medical affairs at Nebraska Medicine, will be installed as president of the Nebraska Medical Association during its House of Delegates and Inaugural Banquet Sept. 18, at the Regency Marriott Hotel in Omaha. David Merritt, former chief of staff for Michael Levitt, campaign advisor to Newt Gingrich and campaign advisor for Sen. John McCain's presidential campaign, will be the keynote speaker for the afternoon session of the House of Delegates meeting. A social hour reception will follow with political cartoonist Paul Fell providing the entertainment of caricature drawings for those in attendance. The meeting will conclude with the inaugural dinner to install Dr. Frankel as the 2015-2016 NMA president and honor Richard Blatny, M.D., as presiding president. Dr. Daccarett promoted to associate professor
Miguel Daccarett, M.D., has been promoted to associate professor, UNMC Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation, effective July 1. Dr. Daccarett has been at UNMC since 2006 and specializes in orthopaedic traumatology and sports medicine.

Two pediatric faculty members have been promoted effective July 1:

  • Jessica Snowden, M.D., associate professor, division of pediatric infectious diseases
  • Scott Fletcher, M.D., adjunct professor (clinician), division of pediatric cardiology

Rob Spicer, M.D., professor, pediatric cardiology, received the Hobart E. Wiltse, M.D., Ph.D. Excellence in Medical Education Award. The award was created in 2007 to recognize Dr. Wiltse, a longtime UNMC pediatrician who died that year. Dr. Wiltse was considered one of the outstanding educators on campus.

Medical students/house officers recognize top teachers in pediatrics

The UNMC medical students complete evaluations on the faculty and house officers during the year.  The medical student education team reviews the evaluations and determines who receives recognition each year.  The following were recognized on May 15 for their excellence in teaching:

  • Faculty:  Eric Rush, M.D., pediatrics genetics
  • Community Faculty:  Terry Wooldridge, M.D. and Tina Scott-Mordhorst, M.D.
  • House Officer:  Joshua Bies, M.D.

The house officers also select outstanding educators each year.  These awards were given at the annual banquet on June 5.

  • Outstanding Academic Faculty:  Howard Hsu, M.D., cardiology.
  • Gilbert C. Schreiner, M.D. Outstanding Community Faculty Member Teaching Award:  Monica Vargas, M.D.
  • Patrick Doherty, M.D., pediatrics administration, was recognized for his support and dedication to the residency program.

Dr. Sasson takes post at Stony Brook University

After 14 years at UNMC, Aaron Sasson, M.D., will be leaving at the end of July to become chief of surgical oncology at Stony Brook University in Stony Brook, N.Y. A farewell tea was held for Dr. Sasson on July 15.
