Campus celebrates its newest college

For 43 years, UNMC’s School of Allied Health Professions lived under the College of Medicine roof.

Now, it stands on its own, as an independent college: the College of Allied Health Professions.

But, the interprofessional teamwork that has long existed between the two entities will continue – and grow, said College of Medicine Dean Bradley Britigan, M.D.

On Thursday, the UNMC community gathered on the Ruth & Bill Scott Student Plaza to officially recognize UNMC’s sixth college, a move that took effect July 1.

“This is a day of great pride,” said UNMC Chancellor Jeffrey P. Gold, M.D.

Allied health joins the UNMC College of Medicine, Nursing, Dentistry, Pharmacy and Public Health. UNMC also offers graduate studies as part of the university-wide Graduate College.

“We will become an eminent college of allied health and one that will make UNMC proud,” said Kyle Meyer, Ph.D., senior associate dean for the College of Allied Health Professions, who thanked the many individuals who, over the years, have helped make the transition possible.

Motorists and pedestrians passing under the 42nd Street skywalk Thursday afternoon may have noticed two new banners, which were hung to recognize and welcome the new college.
