Each Thursday, we randomly feature a medical center employee. This week, we learn about:
- Name: Kim Morrison
- Hometown: I can’t just pick one. Born in Beaufort, S.C., spent most of my school years at Lo-Ma in Logan, Iowa, but went to five different schools growing up. Graduated from Treynor High School.
- No. of years at UNMC: 6 and a half.
Tell us a bit about what you do here at UNMC.
I am the human resources associate for the UNMC Department of Pharmacology and Experimental Neuroscience (PEN). I handle recruitment, coordinate our summer program, work with international students and faculty on VISA issues, send out numerous emails to my department “encouraging” them to get a flu shot, complete evaluations, renew benefits and complete surveys. I also am a notary, so I assist many faculty and staff in the Durham Research Center. Most recently, I was named the department midwife after being a birthing coach for a new employee from Pakistan (I even got to cut the cord). What an amazing experience overall!
Leadership is one of UNMC’s brand values. Tell us of a time you witnessed a person or group act as a trusted resource at UNMC.
The PEN administrative team is amazing! There have been countless times when we have had to pull together to get things done. Each member of our team is always willing to jump in and help out when needed, whether it’s a department or campus event. We usually travel in a pack, and we work very well together! We work hard, but we have fun, and to us, that is the most important quality of a great team!
What is your favorite summer activity?
I am not a person who can pick one favorite anything! NHL Stanley Cup Finals (Go Blackhawks!). Baseball, cookouts, lounging by the pool with family and friends, reading on the deck, walking my Huskies . . .
List three things people may not know about you.
- I was born in a naval hospital and the total bill was $8.75 which covered the cost of linen services at the hospital (my mom loves that story).
- I have registered for graduate school three times, and each time found out I was expecting a child, so I postponed. After the third child, I stopped applying. It didn’t work — I had a fourth. I still plan on getting my master’s degree . . . probably after menopause.
- Climbing Mt. Rainier is on my bucket list.
Loved reading about you Kim. Thank you for always coordinating Denim for Disabilities in your department.
That's my sister and she is the best!
She is amazing, and has a heart of gold! It sounds like her department is a great group!
