Nora Sarvetnick, Ph.D.

The following awards were won by UNMC College of Medicine faculty during the month of February. These 10 awards represent almost $1.1 million in new funding to UNMC.

Amar Singh, Ph.D., biochemistry & molecular biology, has received a National Institutes of Health award for $300,000 from the National Cancer Institute to study how the overexpression of certain tight junction proteins, and their effects on the underlining regulation of mucosal permeability, impacts inflammatory bowel disease and its progression to colon cancer.

Runqing Lu, Ph.D., genetics, cell biology and anatomy, has received support from the American Society of Hematology to study how transcription factors regulate B cell growth and differentiation in the setting of chronic lymphocytic leukemia.

Nora Sarvetnick, Ph.D., surgery – transplant, has received funding through the University of Nebraska Foundation to continue her studies on autoimmune type 1 diabetes by attempting to grow and regenerate the insulin-producing islet cells of the pancreas.

James Talmadge, Ph.D., pathology & microbiology, has received support to study the use of aqueous ozone, which is cold water infused with ozone gas, as an effective cleaner and disinfectant.

Diana Do, M.D., ophthalmology and visual sciences, is the UNMC lead on a phase I study assessing the safety and pharmacodynamics of a novel treatment for patients with diabetic macular edema.

Angela Yetman, M.D., pediatrics – cardiology, is the UNMC lead for a clinical trial through the Shriners Hospital for Children. This study will assess the effectiveness of blood testing for monitoring aortic disease in patients with Marfan syndrome.

Shirley Delair, M.D., pediatrics – infectious diseases, is the UNMC lead for a Phase 1 clinical trial that will assess the pharmacokinetics of a combinational IV drug for treatment of pediatric gram-negative infections.

Timothy McCashland, M.D., internal medicine – gastroenterology and hepatology, has received support to assess the documentation of hepatic encephalopathy in clinical practices.

Peter Coccia, M.D., pediatrics – hematology/oncology, has received a Children’s Oncology Group Work Order from Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.

Deepta Ghate, M.D., M.B.B.S., ophthalmology and visual sciences, has received support from the American Glaucoma Society to study intraocular pressure and aqueous outflow in a mouse model of Alzheimer's disease.

New database will aid grant seekers The Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research has established a grant resource library to complement efforts of investigators and faculty to prepare competitive grant applications.
