Golfing for brain cancer research
At the age of 27, Craig Harrison, Nebraska Medicine staff nurse in the neuroscience ICU, was diagnosed with a brain tumor and underwent surgery, chemotherapy and radiation with the help of his oncologist, Nicole Shonka, M.D. In May 2013, free of deficits but not tumor free, Harrison decided to start the Save the Brain Campaign, which raises money for brain cancer research at UNMC. On May 16, the 2nd Annual Save the Brain Golf Tournament will be held at Tiburon Golf Course, located at 10302 S. 168th St, one-half mile north of Highway 370. Innovation Open House draws crowd
Approximately 150 people, including a delegation from Lincoln and the College of Dentistry, attended UNMC’s inaugural Innovation Open House March 31. A collaborative effort between the School of Allied Health Professions, McGoogan Library of Medicine and E-Learning Academic Affairs, the open house hosted demonstrations of technologies in five locations throughout the library and Wittson Hall. College of Nursing student Courtney Schwisow goes ‘Beyond Expectations’

UNMC College of Nursing Lincoln Division student, Courtney Schwisow, recently was honored with a Bryan Health Beyond Expectations Award. Schwisow, who works at the lab at Bryan, stood out among others for the excellent care she provided a grateful patient. The patient made a gift to the Bryan Foundation for the care the patient received during a recent stay. The patient credits Schwisow for providing comfort and care to get through some rough times. Family Medicine editing group publishes new edition
The UNMC Family Medicine editing team — Paul Paulman, M.D., Audrey Paulman, M.D., Nate Falk, M.D., and Kimberly Jarzynka, M.D. – have just had another book published. “Taylor’s Manual of Family Medicine, 4th edition,” published by Wolters Kluwer, can be ordered through the UNMC Bookstore, and is available on Amazon.com, as well as in e-book form.

Free screening of film that explores sexual violence on college campuses
A free premiere of the “The Hunting Ground,” a documentary about sexual violence on college campuses, will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 22 at the Durham Research Center Auditorium. Students, faculty and staff are invited to attend, and free refreshments will be provided. The movie is presented by Empower, a student-led, interprofessional initiative founded in 2008 as a UNMC Service Learning Academy Legacy project based in the College of Public Health, and the UNMC Office of Student Affairs/Title IX.

Scheppers becomes Nebraska Orthopaedic Hospital’s CEO
Levi Scheppers has been selected to succeed Tom Macy as Nebraska Orthopaedic Hospital’s chief executive officer. Scheppers has served on the NOH board for the past year, and recently launched a comprehensive strategic planning effort to examine options related to the relationship between Nebraska Medicine and NOH. Scheppers first worked with the organization seven years ago as an internal audit consultant with Deloitte. He then worked at Nebraska Medicine Bellevue to serve as chief financial officer. And for more than a year, he has served as chief administrative officer at Nebraska Medicine.

Changes to parking in Lot 42E begin Monday
Beginning Monday, traffic direction in Lot 42E will be designated as one way. There will be arrows painted in the lot to indicate the correct direction to drive. The redirection is designed to ease congestion that occurs during peak child care drop-off and pickup times, but it will be effective at all times.
