Women's Center for Advancement honors UNMC's Angela Hewlett, M.D.
Angela Hewlett, M.D., assistant professor in the UNMC Division of Infectious Diseases and associate medical director of the Nebraska Biocontainment Unit is among 10 women who will be honored June 2 at the Hilton Omaha as part of the 28th annual Tribute to Women Lunch for the Women's Center for Advancement. Honorees were chosen on the basis of their impact and achievements and for demonstrating a lifelong commitment to helping women and their children stay safe and grow strong.

Dr. Swindells to join national panel on antiretroviral guidelines
Susan Swindells, M.B.B.S., has been selected to join the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Panel on Antiretroviral Guidelines for Adults and Adolescents, a working group of the Office of AIDS Research Council. Dr. Swindells, the Terry K. Watanabe chairwoman for HIV/AIDS Research and Care, and professor of internal medicine at UNMC, will begin a four-year term on the panel starting in April.

BHECN sponsors film, panel discussion on ADHD
Howard Liu, M.D., psychiatry, moderated a panel discussion following a March 19 showing of the film "Mommy" at Film Streams. The showing was co-sponsored by the Behavioral Health Education Center of Nebraska. "Mommy" follows a single mother caring for a son with ADHD.

Dr. Frankel named to VNA board
Harris Frankel, M.D., assistant professor, neurological sciences, has been named to the board of directors for the Visiting Nurse Association. Dr. Frankel is senior vice president and chief medical officer for Nebraska Medicine.

Popular Scientist magazine seeks 'Brilliant Ten'
Popular Science magazine is seeking candidates for its annual Brilliant Ten awards. Each year, the magazine picks 10 North American-based scientists, doctors or engineers under the age of 38 to represent the most innovative, incisive, creative and groundbreaking researchers in their fields, and profiles them in a special issue. Nominations can be filled out on the attached form, which explains the criteria in further detail and provides submission information. The deadline for submissions is Thursday, April 2. College of Medicine students help make wishes come true
The College of Medicine's M1 class held a philanthropy event on Feb. 13, the "Hearts with Smarts Charity Date Auction." In addition to the auctioned-off dates, the students received donations from local businesses to raise more than $3,800 for the Nebraska chapter of the Make-A-Wish Foundation. "The total is more than enough to sponsor a wish for a lucky child here in Nebraska," said M1 Class President Anthony White. Students presented a ceremonial check to the foundation on March 4.

Dr. Oleynikov wins award for excellence in medical research
Dmitry Oleynikov, M.D., is the 2014 recipient of the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES) Education & Research Foundation Excellence in Medical Research Award. This award, which is supported through a generous educational grant by Gore & Associates, was established in 2011 to provide scholarships to qualified mid-career SAGES members for leadership development and management training toward advancing minimal access surgery and quality patient care.

UNMC alum serving as president of American Medical Society for Sports Medicine
A 1996 graduate of the UNMC College of Medicine, Chris Madden, M.D., is currently serving as president of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine Dr. Madden is a family medicine physician with an added qualification in sports medicine. He currently practices at Longs Peak Family Practice in Longmont, Colo. AMSSM is a multi-disciplinary organization of 2,500 sports medicine physicians dedicated to education, research, advocacy and the care of athletes of all ages.
