Dr. Khan to present keynote at symposium on filoviruses
Ali S. Khan, M.D., M.P.H., dean of the UNMC College of Public Health, will present a keynote speech at the seventh International Symposium on Filoviruses — Ebola: West Africa and Recent Developments, in Washington, D.C. His speech, Healthcare Preparedness in the U.S., will be presented on March 27. He is one of more than 40 experts from around the world who will present at the four-day conference. The symposium is organized by Target Conferences Ltd. of Israel.

Biocontainment Unit focus of presentation at PDC Summit
Nebraska Medicine facilities director Jen Bartholomew and John Andrews, a senior project manager at Leo A. Daly, will speak on “Best Practices for the Design and Engineering of a Biocontainment Patient Care Unit” at PDC Summit 2015, March 18 in San Antonio, Texas. The presentation will highlight the design and engineering features of the unit, reveal new design considerations specific to the treatment of Ebola and offer best practices for future biocontainment patient-care design.

Devin Nickol, M.D., associate professor, internal medicine-general medicine, is co-editor-in-chief of the Journal of Interprofessional Education & Practice (JIEP), a new journal that is just being launched by the National Academies of Practice and is affiliated with UNMC. JIEP is a quarterly, online-only journal focusing on interprofessional health care topics, including education, practice, policy, policy makers and research. It is devoted to the dissemination of high quality, peer-reviewed articles covering the full spectrum of interprofessional health care education, including first professional degree, post-licensure learners, practitioner continuing education and faculty development. Das awarded a Department of Defense grant to support his research
Srustidhar Das, a Ph.D. student in biochemistry and molecular biology, was awarded $128,315 from the Department of Defense (DOD) to fund his research on “Understanding the MUC16 cleavage and the role of MUC16-Cter in tumorigenesis.”

Virginia-Nebraska Alliance mentioned in award-winning book
Louis Sullivan, M.D., mentions the Virginia-Nebraska Alliance in his book “Breaking Ground: My Life in Medicine,” which received an NAACP Image Award earlier this month. The Virginia-Nebraska Alliance is an academic and research partnership between UNMC, five historically black colleges/universities (HBCU’s) and the University of Richmond, the University of Virginia and Eastern Virginia Medical School. Students conduct research, gain health care career preparation skills and collaborate on health disparities research.
