Student of the Month | Matt Kelly

Editor’s Note: Each month, InterCOM will highlight a “Student of the Month” from the College of Medicine. Students will be featured for their participation in activities outside of medical school and for making a difference in the community. The goal is to recognize students for what they are doing and to encourage other students to get involved in the community. After all, medical school should be much more than studying.

Name: Matt Kelly

Hometown: Papillion, Neb.

Program/Year: College of Medicine, 4th year

Personal:

I was born in Ft. Sill, Okla. but moved around quite a bit as an Army brat. Even though I was born in Sooner country, I am Husker bred and graduated from UNL in 2011.

I decided to pursue medicine because I enjoy interacting with people and having the opportunity to be an advocate for others' health.

One of my most meaningful experiences in medical school was traveling to Jamaica in 2013 to work at a clinic in the parish of Falmouth. Trying to provide quality care with limited resources and witnessing the extreme conditions at the local infirmary were both humbling and eye-opening.

I recently matched into psychiatry at the Naval Medical Center in San Diego and look forward to beginning a new chapter in sunny California this July.

Education:

University of Nebraska-Lincoln (Class of 2011)

Activities:

Class Philanthropy co-chair

Integrated Clinical Experience teaching assistant

North Central Association Higher Learning Commission – UNMC Task Force

Hobbies:

Staying Balanced:

Three things which have helped me keep my sanity the last four years are:

(1) Exercise;

(2) Playing the piano; and

(3) Prayer.

NOTE: I did a lot of #3 before tests.

List three things people may not know about you:

(1) I enjoy watching low-budget horror films.
(2) I was hypnotized once in college (and yes, it really worked).
(3) I can wiggle my ears.
