Dr. Boesen awarded grant from the Lupus Research Institute
Erika Boesen, Ph.D., cellular and integrative physiology, has received a Novel Research Grant from the Lupus Research Institute (LRI). Grants are awarded to projects that live up to "the strictest definition of novel — wholly original, never-been-done-before," according to the institute. Dr. Boesen's project will explore the possibility of reducing iron levels to treat kidney damage, testing for the first time if an abnormal accumulation of iron in the kidney could cause damage and pointing the way for testing existing drugs that reduce iron levels as potential treatments for lupus nephritis.
Dr. Venema receives Excellence in Geriatric Research Award
Dawn Venema, Ph.D., assistant professor in physical therapy education, has been named the recipient of the Academy of Geriatric Physical Therapy (AGPT) Excellence in Geriatric Research Award for 2015. The Academy of Geriatric Physical Therapy was formed in 1978 to address the needs of physical therapy practitioners working with aging clients.
SAHP careers named to 'Best Jobs' list
Five careers supported by educational programs at the School of Allied Health Professions were named to the 2015 U.S.News & World Report 100 Best Jobs list: Physical therapy is No. 5 in health care jobs and No. 6 overall. Physician assistant is No. 7 in health care jobs and No. 10 overall. Diagnostic medical sonography is No. 8 in health care jobs and No. 12 overall. Dietitian and nutritionist is No. 14 in health care jobs and No. 29 overall. Radiologic technologist is No. 15 in health care jobs and No. 32 overall.
Two UNMC students were elected to office for the Society of Student Run Free Clinics. Brian Coburn, a M.D./Ph.D. student, was elected national coordinator-elect, and Joshua Gruhl, medical student, was named publications chair.
Devin Nickol, M.D., associate professor, internal medicine-general medicine, is co-editor-in-chief of the Journal of Interprofessional Education & Practice (JIEP), a new journal that is just being launched by the National Academies of Practice and is affiliated with UNMC. JIEP is a quarterly, online-only journal focusing on interprofessional health care topics, including education, practice, policy, policy makers and research. It is devoted to the dissemination of high quality, peer-reviewed articles covering the full spectrum of interprofessional health care education, including first professional degree, post-licensure learners, practitioner continuing education and faculty development.
