On-campus memorial service set for Dr. Gollan

John Gollan, M.D., Ph.D.

The College of Medicine will be hosting a memorial tribute to John Gollan, M.D., Ph.D., former dean of the college, who died Jan. 6 at age 72 after battling Parkinson’s disease.

The memorial will be at 4:30 p.m. Feb. 23 in the Linder Reading Room.

Dr. Gollan was dean of the College of Medicine from 2003-2010. A native of Australia, Dr. Gollan was recognized internationally for his work in gastroenterology. Prior to coming to UNMC in 2001, he worked at some of the leading medical centers in the world including Harvard Medical School, University of California, San Francisco, University of London, and University of Adelaide, South Australia.

He joined UNMC as chair of the department of internal medicine and two years later was elevated to dean of the College of Medicine. He stepped down as dean in 2010 and wound up his career as emeritus professor, internal medicine-gastroenterology.

    John Gollan recruited many division chairs for his Department of Internal Medicine and as Dean filled several departmental chairs. An internationally known hepatologist trained at research powerhouses, John's recruits comprise a significant legacy at UNMC. In addition, he
    was a gracious positive person, a continuing investigator, and a spirited bedside teacher.
