The 2015 Diversity Lectures and Cultural Arts Series kicks off Feb. 27 with “The Journey,” a play about Aaron Douglas, known as the father of the Harlem Renaissance.
The Diversity Lectures Series features scholarly lectures and presentations addressing contemporary issues of diversity and cultural performances highlighting the diverse cultures present in the community. The goal of the series is to encourage discussions and serve as a tool to inform faculty, staff and students about different perspectives, cultures and social issues.
The series is sponsored by UNMC Human Resources.

Spring 2015 events:
- Feb. 27: “The Journey,” a play by Peggy Jones with Denise Chapman. “The Journey” is an award-winning artistic interpretation about Aaron Douglas, the first black graduate of the UNL arts department in 1922, who became known as the father of the Harlem Renaissance, noon to 1 p.m., Eppley Science Hall Amphitheater. Lunch will be provided for the first 50 participants.
- March 20: “Sisters of Selma,” a film about a group of Catholic nuns from around the country who joined the voting rights protests in Selma, Ala., in 1965, noon to 1 p.m., Sorrell Center, Room 2010. Bring your own lunch, dessert provided.
- April 9: Culture Fest, focusing on the celebrations of Mardi Gras in the U.S., the Lantern Festival of Taiwan, Carnival in Brazil, Oktoberfest in Germany and Dia de los Muertos in Mexico, 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Truhlsen Events Center.
- June 4: Gay & Lesbian Pride Month presentation by PFLAG, noon to 1 p.m., Durham Research Center Auditorium. Lunch is provided to the first 50 participants.
