How did you fall in love with medicine?
A football injury caused me to have multiple surgeries during my first year of college. The entire medical team, including nurses, physical therapist and physicians, were all awesome. It was the first time I was able to see medicine as a healing art. That is how I feel in love with this field, for the art and creativity to heal the entire patient.

Three things people may not know about you:
- My great uncle, Benjamin Bluitt (1864-1946), was the first African-American surgeon in the state of Texas. The city of Dallas named a street Bluitt Avenue, and a hospital Bluitt-Flowers Medical Center, in recognition of his community efforts.
- I am deathly afraid of clowns.
- Giraffes are my favorite land mammal — dolphins if we are in open water.
DeAndre is one the finest young men I have ever met–one of my most favorite students.
Everyone may hear and see DeAndre as a great student within the College of Medicine but he is much more than that. I am glad to see him succeeding and making his future a reality. I want to say, "Thank you DeAndre for all you have done for UNMC!"
I have known DeAndre for years. He has always been an upstanding guy. His love for others will only enhance his career and bring a special bedside manner to his patients. His love for God is also unique and he will continue to supr is and thrive even under pressure.
