• Hometown: Paris, Texas
• Program/Year: Fourth-year medical student

How did you fall in love with medicine?
A football injury caused me to have multiple surgeries during my first year of college. The entire medical team, including nurses, physical therapist and physicians, were all awesome. It was the first time I was able to see medicine as a healing art. That is how I feel in love with this field, for the art and creativity to heal the entire patient.

Three things people may not know about you:

• My great uncle, Benjamin Bluitt (1864-1946), was the first African-American surgeon in the state of Texas. The city of Dallas named a street Bluitt Avenue, and a hospital Bluitt-Flowers Medical Center, in recognition of his community efforts.
• I am deathly afraid of clowns.
• Giraffes are my favorite land mammal — dolphins if we are in open water.
