A new email scam is making the rounds, and it is proving surprisingly effective — for the cyber thieves.
UNMC’s Information Technology Services is warning all faculty and staff of a new phishing email that has snared some workers in the area — although none at the medical center.
The email, which could appear to come from some legitimate area within the UNMC organization, will prompt the user to enter their user name and password. If the information is provided, the hacker can then access the email account, blocking certain messages from the incoming email — for instance, emails from payroll alerting you that a change has been made to your direct deposit account.
Once the hacker gets into the payroll system, your paycheck can be deposited in an alternate account while the emails alerting you of the change will be diverted.
A reminder: Never share your user ID and password.
If you get an email requesting your user ID or password, do not click on the link in the email. If you are concerned about an email’s legitimacy, contact the ITS Helpdesk.
