Sen. Johanns applauds med center during visit

Nebraska Sen. Mike Johanns visited UNMC shortly before Election Day, touring the emergency department, discussing the Biocontainment Unit and meeting with UNMC Chancellor Jeffrey P. Gold, M.D.

Sen. Johanns met with Robert Muelleman, M.D., and Wes Zeger, D.O., in the emergency department and also spoke with Philip Smith, M.D., professor of internal medicine, division of infectious diseases, and medical director of the Biocontainment Unit, and Shelley Schwedhelm, director, emergency department, trauma & preparedness services for Nebraska Medicine.

He then met with Chancellor Gold.

“We have always recognized that what happens here is so cutting edge, and it’s just been remarkable what we’ve seen here at the Med Center,” Sen. Johanns said. “Now the world knows that, because of the Ebola crisis.

“I appreciate the dedication that it took to get here,” he said.

“If there was one message I want to deliver to all of the employees here — the physicians, the support staff, nurses and everybody associated with the med center — it is: Thanks.

“Thanks,” he said. “It makes me so proud to be the United States senator for a place like this.

“The world now knows that this is a great place to get great care.”
