Amr Soliman, M.D., Ph.D., an epidemiology and cancer prevention expert in the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center and professor and chairman of the department of epidemiology in the UNMC College of Public Health, has been elected president-elect of the American Association for Cancer Education (AACE). He will serve his term as president in 2015.
AACE is the preeminent professional association for educators from U.S. medical, public health, nursing and dental schools who are interested in professional, patient and public cancer education.
“This position will increase the national and international visibility of UNMC, will help engage current students in cancer education activities, and will provide opportunities for recruiting outstanding students to UNMC,” Dr. Soliman said.
Dr. Soliman joined UNMC in August 2012. His research is focused on investigating causes and risk factors of cancer and how that could help in cancer prevention and control. Most of his research is conducted in developing countries and minority settings in the United States. He is particularly interested in investigating breast, colon and pancreatic cancers.
“Dr. Soliman is an accomplished epidemiologist who has worked tirelessly to educate others on prevention, early detection, treatment and rehabilitation,” said Ken Cowan, M.D., Ph.D., director of the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center. “His experience and expertise will have a major impact on the AACE as it continues to develop the highest standards for cancer education.”
“Dr. Soliman is a champion for cancer education,” said College of Public Health Dean Ali Khan, M.D., M.P.H. “Being elected president-elect by his peers reflects Dr. Soliman’s steadfast commitment and expertise in training students in cancer epidemiology and education.”
Dr. Soliman serves as principal investigator of the National Cancer Institute-supported Cancer Epidemiology Education in Special Populations for public health students at the University of Michigan and University of Nebraska. He also is the co-director of a new program project funded by NCI/Fogarty for research and training on HIV-related malignancies in Tanzania. Along with his previous experience as co-PI of the NCI-supported Cancer Education Program at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, Dr. Khan said Dr. Soliman has the experience required to educate, train and develop the careers of public health students.
