Twenty-two photographs were submitted for consideration in the international photography contest. Five rose to the top as the most aesthetically appealing and of those one is honored as the best in show.
UNMC Public Relations staff members, Rich Watson, multimedia manager, and Liz Kumru, publications editor, chose the five entries listed below for their interesting and colorful photos.

But the grand prize winner, Eric Nagengast, who submitted “A giraffe in the Karoo region of South Africa,” was praised by the judges for composition, the element of surprise and the shallow depth of field that brought only the giraffe into focus.
Congratulations to all of the winners and thanks to all those who submitted a photograph. All five photos will be on display at each International Week activity taking place this week on campus. And check out UNMC’s Facebook page to see all of the photos submitted.

The winners are:
Best in show: Eric Nagengast, fourth-year medical student — A giraffe in the Karoo region of South Africa.
Runners up:

- Max Chiu, third-year medical student — Striking sunset over the clear waters of Bora Bora, French Polynesia.
- Liz Fleissner, clinical study nurse coordinator, Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center — Love Lock Bridge in Prague.
- Jing Li, Ph.D., post-doc research associate, pharmaceutical sciences — Colorado’s fall color.
Photo contest winners will be honored at an event featuring ethnic desserts and tea from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. today in the student commons on the second floor of the Sorrell Center.

Among the other events taking place this week are:
- Wednesday, Nov. 5: An ethnic tea will be held from 9:30 to 11 a.m. in the Maurer Commons area between the Durham Research towers. Ethnic breakfast items will be provided. Winning photos also will be on display.
- Friday, Nov. 7: Flag football tournament at 1 p.m. on the Student Plaza grass, followed by ping pong and badminton tournaments starting at 4 p.m. in the Student Life Center. Food and water will be provided at the late afternoon tournament. Winners of the photo contest can pick up their photos at the tournament.
