Nebraska State Sen. Burke Harr, who represents the Eighth District, visited UNMC last week.
After a breakfast meeting with UNMC Chancellor Jeffrey P. Gold, M.D., Sen. Harr received an update on the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center project from Ron Schaefer, director of planning and construction, and Kenneth Cowan, M.D., Ph.D., director of the center and the Eppley Institute for Cancer Research.
Cancer care at the med center is a personal as well as professional matter for Sen. Harr — his mother was treated at UNMC.
“They did a great job,” he said.
Sen. Harr also had a tour of the emergency department and trauma center, led by Paul J. Schenarts, M.D., chief of trauma, surgical critical care and emergency surgery, and Suzanne Watson, manager of emergency services.
Sen. Harr said he found his visit informative.
“There’s a lot of exciting things happening on the campus,” he said. “What I really wanted to learn is how it is all fitting together, and what we as legislators can do to help and partner with UNMC and The Nebraska Medical Center to improve health care in our state.”
