Film will explore modern sex trafficking

Director/producer/writer Benjamin Nolot interviews a subject in "Nefarious: Merchant of Souls."

In recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, EMPOWER will hold a free screening of the documentary “Nefarious: Merchant of Souls” from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday in the Sorrell Center, Room 2010.

The documentary focuses on modern sex trafficking with footage shot in more than 19 different countries. According to Shared Hope International, 100,000 to 300,000 children are exploited in the commercial sex industry every year in the United States.

The event is open to all who are interested, and refreshments will be served.

EMPOWER, a legacy program of the College of Public Health, Service Learning Academy, educates students, providers, and community members and raises awareness regarding violence against women. It provides education and basic health screenings through collaboration with community partners, empowering those affected by domestic violence and poverty through knowledge of their personal health. This community-campus partnership is sustained through UNMC student leadership and the Women’s Center for Advancement.
