The Nebraska Physiological Society invites the public to attend a free health event on Oct. 11 including a talk by best-selling author and former Sports Illustrated investigative journalist, David Epstein. The event will be held in UNMC’s Durham Research Center from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
The event, which coincides with the 17th annual meeting of the Nebraska Physiological Society, will offer breakout sessions on exercise training, wellness, healthy eating, and specific fitness activities such as the benefits of yoga. Health and wellness exhibitors also will participate.
Epstein’s keynote talk, “Athletic Performance, the Human Factor: What You Need to Know!” will feature new views of thinking about exercise and physiology, focusing on the science of athletic performance and the path to athletic excellence. Epstein is the best-selling author of “The Sports Gene: Inside the Science of Extraordinary Athletic Performance,” which will be available for purchase and autographing.
He is recognized as one of the top sports science and medicine investigative journalists. He has authored or co-authored several of Sports Illustrated’s most high profile investigative pieces, including the revelation that New York Yankee third baseman Alex Rodriguez tested positive for steroids in 2003.
Carol Fassbinder-Orth, Ph.D., president of the Nebraska Physiological Society, said this year’s annual meeting is a departure from the normal annual meeting and is more of a public outreach event.
“This year’s meeting is entirely dedicated to providing the public with useful and exciting information on athletic performance, the physiology of exercise, and promotion of healthy living,” Dr. Fassbinder-Orth said. “We hope participants will learn how scientific research in physiology and exercise science can impact their lives. They also will benefit from interactions with leading researchers and also local organizations and businesses that promote healthy living and exercise.”
Admission is free, but registration is required by Oct. 1.
