UNMC nursing students hold weeklong diaper drive

Students from the UNMC College of Nursing in Omaha will hold a diaper drive every day this week for pregnant teens and young mothers in the foster care system.

Diaper drive schedule

The schedule for diaper drive drop off this week is as follows:

Monday: Second floor atrium, Sorrell Center, 12:50 p.m. – 1:45 p.m.
Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday: Second floor atrium, Sorrell Center, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Thursday: Sorrell Center entrance, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.

All week: There will be collection boxes by the Sorrell Center entrance near the stethoscope; in the Sorrell Center’s second floor atrium; and in the third floor College of Nursing Science atrium.

“These are among the youngest and most vulnerable mothers in Omaha,” said Emma Friesen, one of the coordinators of the event. “This week’s diaper drive is just one way Fostering the Future is working to effect positive change in the lives of these at-risk youth.”

The students recently formed a group called “Fostering the Future,” to help empower children and young adults in the foster care system to understand and take control of their own health.

The students got the idea to start the group after a young woman who was aging out of the foster care system spoke to a nursing class. The students learned that once turning legal age, an individual is no longer a part of the foster system and often times they are out of the system without support.

Donors will be entered into a raffle for prizes such as restaurant gift cards, gas gift cards, and more.
