Campus leaders were on hand Tuesday evening for the official unveiling of “Healing,” the latest piece of public art to be installed on campus.
Donated by interim University of Nebraska President James Linder, M.D., and his wife Karen, the scuplture now is on display in front of the Sorrell Center at 42nd and Emile streets.

“Art adds vibrancy and richness to our campuses, and Karen and I are honored to contribute,” said Dr. Linder. “Many fine works now line the UNMC sculpture pathway. ‘Healing’ anchors the front door of the campus as a visual representation of the important work Med Center employees do each day. We hope you find it inspirational.”
There are several pieces of art on display at UNMC, including Kevin Box and Warren Cullar’s “Rock, Paper, Scissors”; “The Letter Q,” by Fletcher Benton; and “Dangos,” by Jun Kaneko. For a location guide to these and other public artworks in Omaha, click here.
Box also is the creator of the new sculpture, which traveled from the artist’s studio near Sante Fe, N.M. The sculpture, which weighs 700 pounds, arrived in four pieces and was installed by a crane. The bottom part of the base alone weighs 15,000 pounds.
With “Healing,” UNMC has approximately 15 sculptures on its campus.

A story ran in UNMC Today on Aug. 22, under the headline "Unveiling held Tuesday for new sculpture on campus." The first line of the story was "The campus community is invited to the unveiling of a new campus sculpture at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 26."
Some giant medical professional dropped a stethoscope! Perhaps in years to come, our oversized staff member will leave more tools in other campus locations. Love the whimsy!
