“Because of the short- and long-term health benefits to both mother and baby, the American Academy of Pediatrics now considers breastfeeding no longer just a lifestyle choice but a public health issue,” says Lara Anderson, Olson Center lactation consultant.
“We know that breastfeeding can be difficult in the first few weeks and new mothers need support and encouragement. World Breastfeeding Week is a great time to tell these new moms ‘good job’ and to help educate the community that breast milk is healthier.”
On Friday, the Olson Center will have a breastfeeding education table set up in its lobby on the fourth floor of the Durham Outpatient Center. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Aug. 5, they will host exhibits featuring babywearing (the practice of a mother transporting her baby in a wearable carrier), nursing bras and fitting, breastfeeding accessories, breast pumps and supplies, lactation counseling, yoga, pregnancy/delivery education and milk bank donation. From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. participants can receive free chair massages and pregnancy and infant wellness information. From noon to 1 p.m., Olson Center lactation consultants will speak on “Skin to Skin and the Sacred Hour.” To register for the lecture, call 402-559-6345. One contact hour nursing credit is available for a $10 fee.
