Eleven faculty members celebrate service milestones of 30 years and will be recognized during the annual faculty meeting at 4 p.m. on April 24 in the Durham Research Center Auditorium.

Below, three honorees share memorable moments:

Jim O’Dell, M.D., professor and William W. Bruce Distinguished Chair, rheumatology, said he has two favorite memories from his 30 years at UNMC.

See sidebar for other honorees

“First memory is holding a press conference to announce the publication in the NEJM of successful combination therapy for rheumatoid arthritis by RAIN investigators (May 1996) and, second, receiving the College of Medicine Outstanding Teaching Award in 2000. These two memories signify achievements in both research and teaching — which are both passions of mine.”

Angie Rizzino, Ph.D., professor and program director, Eppley Institute, has these memories:

Joan Sivers, D.D.S.

“My favorite memory is mentoring so many outstanding Ph.D. students over the years.”

Joan Sivers, D.D.S., Carlson Professor of Dentistry and assistant dean of clinics, said:

“It has been a joy to have great working relationships and friendships with many of the faculty and staff, and to have worked with our outstanding students over the years.

“The opportunities to work with those in other units of the medical center have been appreciated for the broader perspectives that they have helped develop. It also has been gratifying to have played a small part in the modernization of our building and the design of such beautiful clinical and educational space.”
