Peter Damiano, D.D.S., director of the Public Policy Center and professor of preventive and community dentistry at the University of Iowa, will give the Richard E. Bradley Memorial Lecture at 1:30 p.m. on April 4, in the Great Plains Room at the East Campus Union at the UNL campus in Lincoln. The lecture is part of the College of Dentistry’s 28th annual Professionals’ Day program.

Susan Lawrence, Ph.D., associate professor and historian of medicine at the Ohio State University, will deliver the 2014 Charles & Linda Wilson Lecture in Medical Humanities at noon on April 17 in Wittson Hall, Room 3034. The topic will be “Civil War Suffering: Making Sense of the Civil War.”

John Lowe, Ph.D.
Three College of Public Health faculty members will receive the Michigan Industrial Hygiene Society’s (MIHS) Best Paper Award at the American Industrial Hygiene Association in San Antonio in June. The paper, “Decontamination of a Hospital Room Using Gaseous Chlorine Dioxide: Bacillus anthracis, Francisella tularensis, and Yersinia pestis,” appeared in the October 2013 Journal of Occupational and Environmental Hygiene. Authors are: John Lowe, Ph.D., assistant professor, environmental, agricultural & occupational health, College of Public Health; Shawn Gibbs, Ph.D., associate dean for student affairs and professor of environmental, agricultural & occupational health, College of Public Health; and Philip Smith, M.D., professor of infectious diseases in the College of Medicine and epidemiology in the College of Public Health. Dr. Smith will be present to accept the award.

Terry Huang, Ph.D.

Terry Huang, Ph.D., continuous professor and special chairperson, College of Public Health, will be the discussion leader for the keynote speech at the 2014 Central States American Society of Landscape Architects Conference, to be held April 9 at the Joslyn Art Museum, 2200 Dodge St. The keynote speaker will be Richard Jackson, M.D., professor and chair of environmental health at the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health. Volunteer Services is hosting its semiannual book sale on April 9-11 in the west atrium on the first floor of Durham Outpatient Center (DOC). The sale will run from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. Funds raised at the sale are used to support special projects for patients, such as hospitality cart supplies, DVDs and other special requests.
